March 1982

Has No one visited Caer Fran since 1981??

Tuesday 9 March 1982

A happy bunch of WRAF arrived mid-afternoon brought by me, Helen (I know, I havn't visited for at least two years!). Lights on OK, heat on OK, water... ah well. Could we turn the water on, no. I even visited the farmer but he was on about the stopcock outside (which we still havn't found). As we look back in this log I see we had this problem last time. So if anyone's struggling in future.

    1. Go into girls "bathroom suite".

    2. Turn "A" on - ie anticlockwise.

    3. Turn "B" + "C" off - ie clockwise.

- But don't ask us how you get the hot water to work cos we don't know yet!

The group consisted of Karen, Jan + myself from RAF Finningley, Paula, Julia + Barbara from RAF Shrewsbury + Patsy from RAF Binbrook. Indeed a mottley crew! Flood warning has just come on the telly, and it is tres wet - but can we turn the hot water on - NO.

By the way Nick, your man on the answering service sounds nothing like you. But thanks Bill for helping me in great need (enuf said).

Patsy's car has broken down so she and Karen have scurried away to RAF Valley MTSS for help - bet they'll never come back - if they do they'll need an amphibious craft to get across the straits tonight!

Hope the rain stops (the roof's leaking).

Julie and I went to phone Bill again to find out how to turn the hot water on - thanks Bill. Patsy + Karen didn't make it back to the hut (skivers!).

Wednesday 10th March 82

Drove to Pant Cyfyng. Walked up Moel Siabod. Weather conditions were not very good. It was hail stoning and very windy.2

(ta Jan) Me again. Via old quarries & Llyn y Foel and ridge to summit of Siabod. Back to Coffin Falls at 14.20hrs. When back at the hut the next happy event was the main fuse blew. Of course it's not a usual looking fuse, so we didn't know what to do. For future reference a Mr Ken Thomas who lives at 17 Ruallt Goch will fix it for you!

Patsy and Karen made it back tonight after a confused effort by Julie and Me to contact them at RAF Valley! They were up the road all this time in a poly bag, poor little things. Anyway we're all off to bed now. I wonder what tomorrow will bring?

Thurs 12 March

Tomorrow arrived. One of our party, Barbara, forced to leave us stranded in this hut. She was delivered safely to Bangor Station, her neck not being what it should be. Paula has developed a mild touch of pleurisy/pneumonia and it was decided to dose her up with Benyline and Beechams and leave her here to guard the place.

To offset these two (more!!) minor problems the sun was actually shining (the promised sunny intervals may have arrived!!). Waterproofs stashed in rucsacs we set off for Pen y Gwryd pub via the Miner's Track to the top of Glyder Fach. The weather continued to hold - not even a spot of rain to mar the day. Then on to Glyder Fawr (we were impressed by the ice and snow in the sunshine) and then down the path to Nant Peris. A very enjoyable days walking. Surely nothing will go wrong tonight.

P.S. Mr Thomas the electrician came, and it cost us £6-50 to get a new main cylinder fuse in!!

Friday 12th march 82

Waking up and getting out of one's bag is getting more and more difficult! Due to a late start and other factors we decided a nice walk up Cnicht was in favour for the day.

We drove around to Nant Gwynant and started walking by Gelli Lago. Once on the top the view was stupendous, it was beautifully clear, but very cold and windy. After a Ribena and fag stop we descended via Llyn Llagi back to the car.

Cheese and beans on toast for tea then (luxury) we all trogged off to Plas y Brenin for absolutely blissful showers. Reborn!! Good to have friends in the right places. Then an evening spent in the Prince Of Wales pub (by the fire) followed by a mass eat-in finished the day.

27/28th March '82

Ian Barnett, Phil Mc Kenna, Tony Ashton (guest), Chris Martin, Paul Harty.

Climbed in Pass Saturday, ? Sunday - Kath Gott, Don Thompson (also waz ere!) we had a grand Saunter along the Carnedds (Newydd Past) was getting a little busy at one point but apart from the haze restricting the view it was a good day glad to get the car park and a cup of rosy lea (with a couple of re-fills). Enjoyed a good nights kip! waking to sunny skies!

29.3.82

Arrived to find the Pass plastered with new snow! Decided that it's really quite exciting having your back wheels overtake your front wheels at 60mph.

Easter Sat 10th April

Arrived with the lad via Y Garn, to find an "A" team in residence. Having observed the length and intensity of their discussions as to their climbing intentions, for 2 nights and mornings, one can understand why they havn't time to chronicle their achievements. Who were they? S.L. P.H. J.P. P.Mc. E.R. K.T. What had they done! I heard the names "Girdle of Castell Helen" confirmed & "Falcon" and many more I am too skolled to remember (Liverpool 5 Man City 0!)

Easter Sun

MT & I traversed the snow-capped Carnedds in superb weather. (Also Sir Ranulph-Twistleton-Wykenham-Finnes and his batman Charlie reached the North Pole for which he received an Easter Egg).

Easter Mon

Mass migration to Anglesey. MT & I had "Diff"icult periods between lying in the hot sun on Holyhead Mountain. Isn't Wales marvellous again; havn't been here since recent ice- age.

P.S. Do we really need to filter the water before flushing it. GT & MT.

14/4/82

Set off early to do the Pyg Track, we went up Crib Goch and along the knife edge to Snowdon. The weather was misty but no wind! In the late afternoon the mist cleared to leave the valley bathed in bright sunshine! Adam Lawson had to make the dinner, most remained uneaten and is still attached to the pans. Lucy threatened to pee on both Ping and Gray.

15/4/82

Did some climbing at Tryfan. Graham took a slight fall; but didn't break anything, which was the high point of the day. Returned 4.30, left for Sutton Coldfield at 5.40. Thanks very much for the use of the hut - we'll be back! (sorry)

Cordon Bleu catering of course!

On Sunday we were given remission for good behaviour and went climbing. Nick having demonstrated immense skill on the boulders on Saturday night, disappeared towards Snowdon. Several people demonstrated their youth and fitness by walking from Caer Fran to Dinas Cromlech (failure of coordination of transport).

By design Don & Kathy walked from Llanberis to Pen y Pass via all sorts of hills on the north side of the Pass.

June 1982

25th June '82

We arrived for the 25th Anni Ani Anivers - Birthday Dinner.

Where were you all!!

Despite feeling lonely and unwanted we avoided the rain that deluged most of the Northern Hemisphere and went to Gogarth. Good brew in the cafe. Lots to oggle on the town then did Britomartis and Wen in fine style, in spite of the fog horn's attempt to put us off.

July 1982

Sat 3rd July

Went to Tremadoc to glorious sunshine. Dragged Bill Sutherland up such routes as Merlin and Axeminster even though I was suffering from love sickness. Came back mentally and physically shattered, had a shower and went down to Llanberis City centre for a drink where we sorted out the world's problems. Today (Sunday) plan to go to Gogarth (I am a little worried as people seem to pull strange faces when I ask them what's it like). Hope to be around for next meet.

Paul Alan

2nd July

Eaglesfield School Party.

Arrived to find hut in Immaculate condition - new showers will no doubt help to ensure the lads keep clean all week!

Saturday 3rd

Superb day - warm and clear with just enough breeze to prevent overheating. The team headed for Moel Siabod as an introductory walk and what a reward - immaculate views - could see mountains in all directions from Moel Famau to Cader Idris. Had a fine trundle into the quarry and then up the ridge to summit. "Follow the leader" was the game and so arrived at the top almost unaware of the effort. Chocolate and Dextrosol - "speed" - ensured high energy. Ran back to base - pity automatic minibus can't be force fed - had to be pushed up hill. All in a day! A man's life!

Sunday 4th

Weather not so good - looked like getting wet one way or another so thought we would do it in style - Dolgarreg Gorge - Should not be missed by anyone with a thirst for adventure and water wings. Played follow the leader again - the trick is for the leader to get everyone wet while remaining dry. This must be by fair means - no pushing, splashing or shoving, simply little slimy tests that deposit the party in the river. Must claim some success - all of the troupe fell in and yet the staff remained bone dry. 10/10 for "Sirs" (Perhaps we did miss out on trying to swim up waterfalls - did look good but....pride!)

Monday 5th

The lads having developed a thirst for scrambling were ripe for a real scramble - Tryfan north ridge. By fair means or foul we wound our way to the summit. An excellent performance by one and all with the odd shaky moments conquered by the timorous who arrived back with chests broader than "Morgans". Descended to Idwal with John (Humphries) playing Chariots of Fire and running slowly off to retrieve minibus.

Tuesday 6th

One of those wonderful wet Welsh days - steady rain dropping out of the sky and so a history lesson today - Caernarfon. Had a quick blimp at the Castle (hotel) from outside and then on to Abersoch for beach football and swimming. Nice to see how most Scousers spend their summer holidays in a caravan on N Wales coast. Could also see the attraction since it turned into a brilliant warm sunny evening. Returned in brilliant sunshine via Tremadoc. The lads are now learning all of the tricks how to go up mountains, climb, and now most important of all the art of festering - taught by a grand master.

Wednesday 7th

"The climbing day". Introduction to ropes etc. Where better than Capel Curig - a short walk, plenty to do and - the threat of rain. Anyway did some real climbing, not quite 7b but I'm sure just as much effort was made as any of the "Rock Stars" - apologies to Mick, Rod, etc.

Thursday 8th

Turned into beautiful day but the week has taken its toll. A nice casual stroll around Cwm Idwal to view the local tourist sights - beautiful they are when viewed in that light and not (as) the playground and challenges of the climber. Swimming in the lake is good fun as well as splashing each other and running away with the clothes of the swimmers. Plenty pranks but not a vigorous mountain day. However, we enjoyed ourselves - not only today but for all of the week. Once again an Eaglesfield party thanks the M.M.C. for use of the hut - perhaps few of you realise the service you provide for the lads from the "Smoke" - they love it - Thanks.

P.S. if your drains block phone me not Dynarod.

John

29.7.82

Family Meet - Glen Hirons et al

Advance party. Jim, Gwen, Tricia, & Tina Murray arrived hot and sticky expecting showers and fancy extras (added since last visit!). WATER OFF! So began 8 days of bucket carrying leaving one of the party with neanderthal arms. A vain search for the stop tap (not the culprit but a last hope) turned up the slabs which once covered same but no water. A trip to the reservoir proved pointless since it was overflowing - all very frustrating!

30.7.82

Tourist tripping - Beddgelert, Llyn Cwellyn etc. in scorching heat and tourist hordes.

Main party arrived late evening

Glen Margaret Martin Paul Joe Hirons

John & Sara Peake

Kate Jones

31.7.82

A hazy day with low clag.

John and Sara claiming it's always sunny in Anglesey set off in that direction only to be rained off.

Glen and family explored the lower slopes of Snowdon and the latest Llanberis amenities (museum and nature walk).

Jim and family with Kate toured Idwal & as far as the Kitchen then coffee at Capel Curig.

Saturday 31st July 1982

Ray Duffy, Kevin and Cass Flint camping at Nant Peris during family meet, visited Clog Clogy - the crag in the valley, did Ferdinand (bloody hard for HVS) 5b and Bovine HVS. Everyone should do the top pitch, massive jugs on steep rock and they keep arriving all the way to the top, Excellent route. The demon midges found us so we ran away from there leaving the flies and half the British Army to do battle together. Arrived at Tremadoc and after loo and brew stop did Falcon E1 5b (a real Tony Blackburn move near the top.)

August 1982

Sunday 1st August 1982

Same 3 still camped in the valley with Kev's friends and the midges. Drove to Tremadoc as it had rained in the early morning. I needed a big breakfast and lots of energy food from the cafe. Went to Craig y Castell (got the spelling from guidebook). The breeze dropped, haze cleared a bit as if in anticipation and the humidity reached sauna level as Duff geared up at the bottom of ........The Wasp E1 5b,5b. A stirring in the stomach already relieved there was no excuse for any further delay. Battle commenced at approx 12.00 and a good fight ensued until hanging from a jammed forefinger (which was rapidly numbing due to cut off circulation our hero attempted to place a fast hex 6 in the top of the crack while scratching at the minute foothold, in a desperate flurry the rope was clipped, and the numb finger extracted as the leader's body hurtled backwards into space....a peel.... Down quickly to a manky, sweaty, overhanging, off- width hand jam for a rest, not on the rope, and realising that energy was diminishing, not returning, our illustrious leader announced his intention to "go for it". Upward quickly on poor finger jams into the blood-cutting finger- eater, a quick lock-off, reach to a small jug, left hand searching the rounded top finds a small hold, a quick flick of the right to a palm down position, a lunge upward, semi mantleshelf, right foot hurtled into a groove, and a push up and over! "Piece of piss really". Second pitch was a doddle - Wasp. The resident photographer attempted to do her David Bailey shots but was only able to catch shots of a rounded blue bottom swinging in space.

Monday 2nd Aug 82

Dropped Cass off at Bangor Station. Drove up the Pass which was still steaming after a recent monsoon so we headed for Tremadoc. Humidity about 90%, temperature in the 70s, really hot man. Did The Weaver E2 5b,5b/c,5b the last pitch was Kev having his bit of fun with Duff giving him the crux of Diadic, whoops, off again! Sound mountaineering decisions then ensued, to go swimming at Criccieth. Half an hour later a monumental thunderstorm wiped out all climbing everywhere. Got back to the hut thinking the rain might have put the water back on. No chance, and the drains were blocked. Ian and Duff spent a pleasant hour with the long black plastic pipe poking.... and flushing with buckets carried from the stream. (Note to all members - please eat prunes and rhubarb to save blockages).

Water Board Tel No 830575

Phoned 4/8/82 to inform about being cut off regularly.

Tuesday 3rd Aug 82

Tremadoc - Barbarian - brilliant climbing

Dinas Mot - Superdirect - superb main pitch

Met John Redhead and Keith Robertson in Pete's Eats J.R. had just done Masters Wall, Cloggy. First pitch 85ft E8, 7a naming the route Tormented Ejaculation (from his description of the unprotected 85ft runout this route should have a government health warning).

Wednesday 4th Aug 82

Running away from the rain Bye Bye.

P.S. Duffy can't take the pace (especially when the Corner winks at him every journey down the Pass!)

1.8.824

A threatening day with occasional heavy rain.

Kate last seen heading towards Moel Eilio.

John and Sara departed Pass-wards.

Glen Jim and family had an enjoyable time at Slate Museum, walk around Vivian Quarry and Padarn railway finishing up in Pete's Eats.

Nick, Di, David and Sara Jones arrived on way to Anglesey - full house when Duffy, Kevin and Cass arrived (see previous record).

2.8.82

A sad farewell to the Hirons and Jones' off to camp in Anglesey. Back to bread and jam now that Margaret's catering stops and the Murrays are back on self catering (oops, sorry Gwenne!). Visit to deep mine 450' descent at Blaenau Ffestiniog (a trip well worth making but requires an early start to miss the queues). The planned return via Black Rock Sands was washed out by a violent thunder storm and still no water at Caer Fran but drains blocked - see Duffy's previous comments!)

3.8.82

The big one! (for Tricia 11yrs and Tina 7-10yr at least) a scorching hot day. Snowdon via P y G and descent via Miner's Track. Route completed in shorts and sweat. Beautiful swimming in Llyn Glas made a great end to the day.

4.8.82

A rest day (?) Caernarfon Castle through the traffic jams, Beaumaris and swimming in Padarn.

5.8.82

A dubious day with threatening clag which turned out very hot with partial views through the mist. Tryfan via north ridge and west gully. An odd pitch with Gwynne on the sharp end and dragging up her liabilities. Even a little sunshine on the top with the heaviest cloud at our feet. Swimming in Padarn.

6.8.82

Departure for Edinburgh after deblocking DRAINS AGAIN!

A great family meet - many thanks Glen & Margaret & a great week at Caer Fran in spite of lack of water, lack of drains, traffic jams, tourist hordes and £1 parking at Pen y Pass - nice to be back!

Jim Murray

A good weekend despite weather - very good food and an uncrowded Padarn on Sat night?

27/8/82

Dave Harrison, Bill Sutherland, Neil Davies, and Mike Lewis set off midst persistent precipitation in the general direction of Caernarfon and met with Simon and Pam Hindley at the Waterloo hostelry in Betws y Coed. The journey was resumed at the appropriate time (11-00).

28/8/82

We were woken by the chirping of the birds (well Dave and Neil really) as the sun beat down on Caer Fran. Plans were made and two cars headed up the Pass. Dave and Neil headed for Dinas Mot, while Simon, Mike, Bill, and Pam headed for the Grochan. Neil led Superdirect and Zeta, and Dave led Crosstie three 1st class routes No falls, No resting on runners (none were good enough) and only a slight tight rope at the top of Zeta meant a good day was had by them apart from the fact that they missed their lift back to Llanberis by a fraction of a second, MEANWHILE....

Bill, Simon and Mike did Ribstone Crack (Mike 1pt aid) and Bole Way (Mike 1 "Boys Own" Aaaaarrghh).

29/8/82

Precipitation prevailed once more in the Pass. A leisurely morning was had by all and in the afternoon an attempt to go climbing was made, the party ended up on Little Tryfan then on to the Swallow Falls.

30/8/82

Guess what? Yes! more rain, and half the group slept in 'til 12.00. We then left for Craig y Forwen and the good weather of the sea side.

September 1982

2nd Sept 82

Once again back to Caer Fran after four years, the new found climbing partner decided to do Superstars with Poxy Donna Murray instead of visiting the hut. She could have had beans and sausages instead she chose caviare and frogs legs courtesy of B.B.C. Still found yet another partner will see if I can remember how to climb or how to turn the water on!!

4th Sept

The boys arrived (Neil Davies, Dave Harrison) at 4 in the morning by motorbike. Journey went well except for high speed crash (3 mph) coming up the lane, Neil dropped the bike on my leg and by god it hurt. At 8am we were awoken by much noise from the hive of activity the hut had become. Went down to Pete's (on foot) for breckers, sausage butties. Then to C.R.S. for provisions. Arriving back at the hut we found the J.C.B. already digging the drains. By 11.30 the J.C.B. had left and Nick Jones, Neil and I set about laying pipes. Nick's son Dave made the tea. This task was finished after a short lunch break by 3pm. The boys then set off to solo some routes on the Wastad, both of us did Crackstone Rib and then Neil went on to do Shadow Wall and Bole Way. Then after a small paddle in the river we went back to the hut, stopping for chips on the way.

(This has been nominated for a Nobel prize for Literature) .

5th Sept

Got up 9.30 absolutely knackered. Had three pound of sausages for breckers (what a silly word) then wobbled off to Idwal on the remains of the motorbike. The weather was luvly, shame we were knackered with bruised arms, shins, etc.

Sat 18 Sept

Cloggy - started White Slab, mist came down even further - abbed off -

John & Sara Peake

October 1982

9.10.82

The boys are back!

Arrived about 10am. Dumped gear and went off to do Snowdon horseshoe (Crib Goch second). Bit misty, good walk though.

10.10

All whacked out had lie in and wandered off home.

Neil, Dave and guests

(P.S. Dave broke a cup shall ring Nick)

Naughty boy!!

24.10 - 29.10

John Mc, Les Anderson & various friends coming and going.

Although ropes were brought, basically a canoeing week - if the canoes will last. Monday - Seiont - Llanberis - Caernarfon - bit of a boat basher. C.F. converted to workshop with 3 boats under repair.

To Conway gorge - not a lot of water but managed to get down.

Off surfing on Anglesey but no surf just huge dumping waves (ask Les about the size - the 10,000' wave got him). Scratched about different beaches but generally a poor day. The icing on the cake - the Tryweryn in full flood. An excellent facility, good water and no access hassle.

29.10

So good going back today.

Drod and Jeanette - Walked up Snowdon - thick cloud. Jeanette getting good at darts! Look out John Mc Bean.

November 1982

10/11/82

A team of us went climbing Snowdon in freezing conditions. It took us 2½ hours the wind was force 10 very dangerous. Anyway we made it down to this hut at about 5.30pm. We were led by Dave, and there was 11 of us which was

December 1982

M.M.C. Meet 18th - 19th Dec 82

18th

Woke up to find snow everywhere. Strong team went off towards Cloggy hoping for a repeat of last years blizzard but the weather didn't oblige and the only result was wet feet. The meet leader (the intrepid G B) spent the morning doing a rally cross around Llanberis testing out his snow chains.

(Got a Cortina most of the way to Cloggy).

Being Xmas an Xmas meal was laid on :- Turkey a la giblets plastique, followed by non stick Xmas pudding.

19th

Spent the morning watching atrocious weather and recovering from assorted hangovers. Neither langours or weather improved so went home via pub.

I would like to point out that Tonto still owes me a drink for diving off the path. Neil.

23.12.82

Arrived late due to puncture on motor bike (will this boy never learn)(I didn't fall off though) the rain was gradually washing away the snow. We went for a slide on the remaining snow near top of Snowdon, came back and dried off. Into the village for provisions (will we get through 3 full bottles of brandy in four days?). Settled back to watch the telly and get blotto (don't do things in halves these guys!).

24.12.82

Christmas Eve

We rose early (noon) to find a mild day reminiscent of June or July, not December. All of the snow has gone and we are not too pleased. Den to a small mishap in C.R.S. Ltd, two chickens were purchased and it looks as if chicken is the order of the day or of the week as the case may be. With nothing to do we sat down to try to finish off the great amounts of food and of course liquid we had*.

Neil is very excited about the prospect of Santa Claus coming but I have not tried to build his hopes up too much telling him the sledge needs snow. Team morale is low as the mild weather seems here to stay, but the brandy will probably cure the blues. I would just like to say at this point that at this time of year one has to be near family and friends but as usual the boys are coping.

Dave Harrison

Proof writing care of N Davies Ltd.

P.S. Dave feeling after effects of yesterday's curry mainly due to me (in Joke).

* Half the bottle of brandy and two 4-pints now gone.

25.12.82

Got up 1-o'clock put 2nd chicken in with roasties tried to think of something to do to commemorate this great day. While we were thinking we finished off the 2nd bottle of brandy and a 4 can. after tea (including sweet carrot, a Davies speciality) we watched "The Black Hole" on telly. At 11.30 we decided to go for a walk. At 12.45 we turned for home after passing Clogwyn Station with the wind enabling us to glide using our cags. We got back to the hut and crashed out.

HAPPY XMAS!!!!

N Davies.

P.S. We decided to go home tomorrow so finished off the last bottle of brandy and 2, 4-cans of lager.

P.P.S. not bad writing for one so drunk.

26.12.82

Woke at 11.30 am our heads imploding and exploding at the same time (this must be due to Neil putting sugar in the carrots). My sleeping bag was still wet after our small walk and after much effort and a few kicks we cleaned up and went back to the smoke for "prezies".

Happy New Year

The boys.

The weather was misty with intermittent drizzle, but rather on the warm side for the time of the year, in fact above average even for the esteemed Llanberis summer.
